Jane Austen died today – 190 years ago

English writer Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, England. She said, “Life seems but a quick succession of busy nothings.” {1} [Make mine sweet nothings.]... Ms. Austen died in 1817 in Winchester, Hampshire, England.

U.S. writer Carl van Doren was born on September 10, 1885 in Hope, Illinois. He said, “The race of man, while sheep in credulity, are wolves for conformity.” {1} [Maybe they’re wolves in sheep’s clothing?]... Mr. van Doren died in 1950 in Torrington, Connecticut.

U.S. psychiatrist Dr. Karl A. Menninger was born on July 23, 1893 in Topeka, Kansas. He said, “The voice of intelligence... is drowned out by the roar of fear. It is ignored by the voice of desire. It is contradicted by the voice of shame. It is biased by hate and extinguished by anger. Most of all it is silenced by ignorance." {2} [Wow! With all that, it’s surprising that there’s any intelligence left at all!]... Mr. Menninger died in 1990 in Topeka, Kansas.

French financier James Michael Goldsmith was born on February 26, 1933 in Paris, France. He said, “If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.” {1} [I’ve seen plenty of “monkeying” around.]... Mr. Goldsmith died in 1997 in Benahavís, Spain.
