Rosalia de Castro died today – 122 years ago

Spanish writer Rosalia de Castro was born on February 24, 1837 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. She said “Great breakthroughs are always followed by great catastrophes.” {1} [Is this the law of unintended consequences?]... Ms. de Castro died in 1885 in Padrón, near Santiago, Spain.

U.S. President (11th) James K. Polk was born on November 2, 1795 in Pineville, North Carolina. He said “There is more selfishness and less principle among members of Congress than I had any conception of, before I became President of the U.S.” {2} [Hmmmm. I wonder if anything has changed?]... Mr. Polk died in 1849 in Nashville, Tennessee.

U.S. singer Ella Fitzgerald was born on April 25, 1917 in Newport News, Virginia. She said, “It isn't where you came from, it’s where you're going that counts.” {1} [Amen!]... Ms. Fitzgerald died in 1996 in Beverly Hills, California.

Canadian actor Hume Cronyn was born on July 18, 1911 in Ontario, Canada. He was married to Jessica Tandy. He said, “The whole business of marshaling one's energies becomes more and more important as one grows older.” {2} [And that pretty much applies to everything.]... Mr. Cronyn died in 2003 in Fairfield, Connecticut.
