Oscar Hammerstein II was born on July 12, 1895 as Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein in New York City, New York. He wrote the lyrics to the song The Sound of Music and many, many other songs. Mr. Hammerstein died on August 23, 1960 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
